![]() ![]() The current A1392 will simultaneously extend both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands of an AirPort Extreme. The A1264 would extend one band either 2.4 Gz.or.5 GHz. No, since there is no setting to "extend a wireless network" on an A1084 AirPort Express. If I can get the A1084 to work with AirPort Utility 5.x and 'AirTunes', will it also extend the wifi coverage in my house (it'll be on the 2nd floor)? But.saying "should work" is not the same as saying "will work".so this will be one of those times when you won't know how well.or even if.things will work until you try. The older A1084 should work with the new AirPort Extreme if you can locate a 5.x version of AirPort Utility on a Mac or PC to set up the product. If you are considering a new AirPort buy from Apple, you have a 14 day return privilege on the product, so if it won't do what you want, you can return it for credit or a return. ![]() Any version of AirPort Utility 6.x.or.AirPort Utility on an iPhone or iPad will NOT be compatible with the A1084 Express. If you want to try to use the A1084 Express, it can only be set up and administered using an older version of AirPort Utility 5.x on a Mac or PC. It's amazing that the A1084 will work at all, but the drop outs that you are now seeing with the Express indicate that it is heading South, so it may not be around much longer. The A1084 is at least 9 years old, probably older, and the average useful life of an AirPort Express is about 3-4 years. Well, if A1264 is dead, then that is the end of the discussion on that model.Ī1084.assuming it is uld probably be used for AirPlay, but the A1084 calls this AirTunes. Sorry, I forgot to ask: even if Airport Utility 6.3.6 on the iMac refuses to 'see' the Express, would the iPad method you talked about work with an older Express? I have downloaded Airport Utility 5.6.1 (and launcher), but don't know if I can use 6.3.6 to set up the Extreme, and then 5.6.1 to set up the Express.Īny thoughts on this would be most welcome. If I buy an Extreme and set it up, how do I then add the Express to the network. However: the new Airport Utility shows but does not interact with my working Express. I could then use the old, working Express next to my stereo to play music from my iMac. I was thinking of buying an Airport Extreme to run the network, hoping that it would provide wifi coverage in my blind spots. What I want to do is to increase the wifi coverage in my house (no wifi in the kitchen or 3rd floor). ![]() The network in my house runs off the old Express (connected to my modem), which drops connection several times a week. That's why I'm knocking two stars off, because Apple when decided to stop supporting these guys they decided to also prevent the older software from running normally, preventing them from being reconfigured on a Mac.īut once it's set up you'll be so glad you did.I have 2 ancient Airport Expresses, one old and the other even older. In fact, it may be easier to set up on a Windows PC. Here's the catch: you need extra software to initially set it up (Apple AirPort Utility), and if you're doing so on a Mac you'll actually need to download a modified, *older* version of AirPort Utility, as the latest versions completely remove support for these old guys. You can buy a Raspberry Pi and SD card and set them up to do the same thing, but it's going to take a lot of effort and time to initially set up (and you better be familiar with Linux o r willing to learn!), or you can buy an outdated AirPort Express for a fraction of the price, set it up, and play music through it. This is the device that introduced AirTunes (which became AirPlay when it was expanded to the Apple TV and video support was added), and it remains very useful as a digital audio streaming target. IPhones and iPod touch devices, as well as Mac computers, or iTunes on a Windows PC can all stream audio to Apple AirPlay- and AirTunes-certified devices. However, this thing is extremely useful for one purpose: wireless music streaming from an Apple device. This product is outdated at this point, and the wireless router/cable modem combination I get from Time Warner Cable is much more capable than this thing is. This is the cheapest way to stream music from an iPhone or iPod, but it's a bit of a pain to configure at first.
